Gold Surges Above $4,230 as Silver Rallies on Hormuz Optimism

Gold prices extended their winning streak for a third consecutive session, climbing sharply above AUD $4,230 per ounce as investors welcomed signs of progress toward reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Silver also posted impressive gains, highlighting renewed strength across the precious metals sector.

The latest rally was fuelled by reports that negotiations to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could reach an agreement within days. The prospect of easing tensions in one of the world’s most important energy corridors helped push oil prices lower, weakened the US dollar, and encouraged fresh buying in gold and silver.

A Softer Dollar Supports Precious Metals

The decline in the US dollar provided an additional tailwind for bullion, making gold more attractive to international investors. At the same time, expectations for US monetary policy shifted, with markets now anticipating a more measured path for interest rates compared with forecasts just a week earlier.

Lower expectations for aggressive interest-rate increases are generally supportive of precious metals, as gold and silver do not generate income and become relatively more attractive when borrowing costs are expected to stabilise.

Technical Breakout Adds Momentum

Gold’s advance accelerated after prices pushed through a significant technical resistance level, triggering additional buying from traders and institutional investors. Silver followed with even stronger percentage gains, while platinum and palladium also benefited from improving sentiment across the metals sector.

After spending several weeks consolidating around the $4,000 level, gold appears to have regained upward momentum, suggesting investors remain confident in the longer-term outlook despite recent volatility.

Inflation and Federal Reserve Still in Focus

Although geopolitical tensions have eased somewhat, inflation remains a key concern for global markets.

Several US Federal Reserve officials continue to warn that interest rates may need to remain elevated if inflation proves persistent. While policymakers held rates steady at their most recent meeting, they have made it clear that future decisions will remain dependent on incoming economic data.

This ongoing uncertainty continues to reinforce gold’s traditional role as a portfolio diversifier and store of value during periods of economic uncertainty.

Chinese Demand Continues to Strengthen

Another encouraging development for the gold market has been the return of strong buying from China.

Chinese gold-backed exchange-traded funds have now recorded their longest streak of investor inflows in several months, signalling renewed confidence among institutional investors. This buying has helped keep gold comfortably above the important $4,000 support level despite recent market fluctuations.

China remains one of the world’s largest consumers of physical gold, and sustained investment demand from the region could provide additional support if global economic uncertainty continues.

Silver Outperforms

While gold attracted most of the headlines, silver once again outperformed, rising more than 5% during the session. The metal continues to benefit from both its safe-haven appeal and its growing importance in industrial sectors including renewable energy, electronics and advanced manufacturing.

With both investment and industrial demand remaining strong, silver continues to offer compelling long-term value alongside gold.

Outlook

The combination of improving geopolitical conditions, a weaker US dollar, resilient physical demand and renewed investor confidence has given precious metals fresh momentum.

While short-term volatility should be expected as markets continue to monitor inflation data and central bank policy, the underlying fundamentals supporting gold and silver remain firmly in place.

For long-term investors, periods of consolidation often create opportunities to continue building positions through disciplined, regular purchasing rather than attempting to time the market.
