So how does a gold refinery become accredited to the LBMA’s Good Delivery List?
At a minimum, the refinery must –
1) Have been in existence at least five (5) years, and have been refining gold for not less than three (3) years;
2) Have an annual refining production of not less than ten (10) tons of gold for the previous three (3)years;
3) Have a net worth of not less than £15 Million pounds sterling (or equivalent);
4) Show an ability to produce bars which meet the LBMA Good Delivery Rules;
5) Have risk mitigation policies in place that cover various “key areas”, including financial, logistical, money-laundering, bribery and corruption and force majeure;
6) Carry sufficient levels of insurance for precious metals;
7) Demonstrate satisfactory “ownership, financial standing and reputation” acceptable to the “over-the-counter” primary market;
8) Implement the LBMA’s “Responsible Sourcing Program” to ensure that the refinery’s gold supply chain meets international ethical standards; and
9) Pass an independent audit, and agree to submit to annual checks thereafter, to ensure that the refinery satisfies the minimum requirements for refining production and net worth.
